Well, Mr Carl Wertz was my grandfather that passed away two night ago. I just found out about it this morning. I must say that we never spent much time together due to my growing up in Africa. Many would call him a hero for his role as medic in the Navy during WWII. He was one of the men that stormed Iwa Jima. For that alone, he deserves incredible honor.
My respect for him comes from his worldview and desire to advance the cause of Christ. When I was a child, he sent my family money to purchase the land for one of our first church plants. This church now has a building and is a beacon in its community. Just a few weeks ago while bed-ridden due to his cancer, he wrote out a check for 10,000 USD towards the land for Togo Palms. He understood that he could make an impact for Christ long after he has left this earth. There are two acres of land that will be used for years to come to tell people about the God that made a way for them.
I was recently told that he has given 5% of his total income to world missions since 1955. He was truly a man that believed in sacrificing his life so that others can hear about eternal life.

Brother Feere
How wonderful that your grandfather's legacy of sacrificial giving will live on in Africa.
